    Although graingrowers with excellent knowledge about the golden stuff may not use the term, I'll describe Merrywinebone as a 'fairly marginal' grain growing area. Seven hundred kilometres by rail northwest of Sydney Central station, it is at the end of a low speed branch line that once extended to a short distance further Pokataroo from the major coal mining, growing town of Narrabri and smaller Burren Junction.

    For the past five or six days, including this morning, empty grain trains have travelled to Merrywinebone to load. The track is lighter, so there's at least two branch line 48 class locomotives doing the honours.

    This is another encouraging sign as after a drought, eventually there might be no grain trains on this branch line for two or even three years.
