Lots of the applications that need AI wont require an internet connection. The example of your TV currently doing voice command recognition is probably sending your audio off to a server to process then send the command back. Most of these devices will still be hooked up to the internet though to receive data, eg. Netflix on your TV, recipes on your fridge, etc. The difference is that the AI stuff that usually happens in the cloud will now be processed locally on your device.
Regarding the food going off, I imagine they could eventually VOC print each food and then each food in its various stages of decomposition to identify which food is bad. Or they are just looking for signs of mould or other signatures of off food. Not entirely sure what the plan is.
