Thanks Iseki - that is really interesting and helps explain a lot.
In the Neuron drone trial, the Hedera Consensus Service was used. Unlike traditional blockchain, the hashgraph consensus operates in quite a different way and is effectively instantaneous (meaning the ledger is not updated each hour as you mentioned, and the data requirements and energy usage is a fraction of that associated with blockchain):

This a further explanation given by Neuron:

I guess where the Hedera DLT comes strongly into play is where an immutable, auditable log of events is created in relation to drone flights (or for autonomous vehicles, military or medical transport, etc), for business or government purposes. In other words, it is not only desirable for the drone or vehicle to be autonomous, but also that its every movement and action has been logged in real time, and where the log is unquestionably accurate. For example, this could have significant application in pay-as-you-go vehicle insurance.
My question to the forum (bearing in mind my lack of knowledge regarding Akida) was in effect around whether BRN’s Akida neural processor and the Hedera Consensus Service could theoretically be utilized in tandem for applications such as drone flights, autonomous vehicles and the like - for example, the Akida processor being utilized for AI decision making with support from Hedera together with the tracking and auditable log of events it would create.
Best wishes to all.
