It is exactly because of high energy costs that Alcoa is looking to move into areas like HPA with FYI, FYI process is less energy intensive than competitors, and a way to diversify away from energy intensive streams of revenue. RnD projects are funded or not based on balance sheet not cyclical profit margins, investing intelligently through the cycle in evolving the business is something Alcoa is well versed in.
