https://www.wired.co.uk/article/nvidia-ai-chipsThe above article written on 17/8/21 before Akida was commercialised has to be the best article painting the landscape of AI development and if you associate it with ARM's webinar with Brainchip on 9th May, it will blow your mind why Akida could be the disruptive technology that could change the AI arms race and break through the "corporate politics" dominated by Nvidia all these years.
Basic summary for those not that technical:
- GPU's have been shown to be more effective to run AI models than CPU's.
- Nvidia has latched on to this and has expanded it's empire from gaming/graphics to creating supercomputers running AI models for cloud AI (Microsoft, Google etc...all use Nvidia GPU's for their cloud) and governments (US and China mainly) for their personal use...that's almost 100% of this market...ChatGPT and Bard are run by Nvidia's GPUs!
- Nvidia now wants to extend its AI dominance to IoT devices, again thinking it can use its GPU's with smart software which it has been developing for years. This of course will be connected to Nvidia's GPU's in the cloud. Yes, it has been very successful here as well especially with machinery in factories eg, Mercedes are building assembly factories with Nvidia Omniverse.
- It appears that AI has been stagnated with reliance on Nvidia's GPUs and smart software.
- Now in recent years there is AI at the edge for mobile devices and other IoT devices which Nvidia also wants to dominate.
- That's one of the main reason why Nvidia wanted to buy ARM, knowing that ARM's silicon design is in at least 70% of mobile devices so it's the perfect plan to extend it's AI chip dominance into this space.
- However as we all know this did not eventuate. Nvidia is still pushing hard to market its GPU modules with smart software for edge AI. However, the many startups of other AI platforms in this space will prevent Nvidia dominating this space.
- Here's the interesting scenario that is evolving in front of our eyes...ARM has realized it's potential to dominate the edge AI chip market for mobile and IoT devices...by having the webinar with Brainchip it has recognized that Akida is the current leading edge AI platform and I'm sure there will be more collaborative sales pitch from both ARM and Brainchip. If this is successful and ARM's chips are used with Akida, Brainchip will no doubt be a huge take over target...the highest bid of course will be Nvidia IMO knowing that it will never be able to buy ARM due to regulatory issues...wonder how much they will value Brainchip then
...they may have a taste of Akida's ability when they play around with it designing the OS with Mercedes!
- I love the last paragraph with Haas' comment, "As these hurdles are overcome, and chips continue to evolve, AI will expand to touch everything, akin to the wave of connectivity that saw wi-fi support and apps added to objects from toasters to fridges. But in the future, smart won’t just mean internet-connected, but embedded with AI. “It will be everywhere,” ARM’s Haas says. “It will be ubiquitous in every single computing application in the next few years.”"...hopefully embedded with Akida
. Well, Akida did win the award for the most advanced AI IP to be embedded at the edge!
