Here are some on-device features you may be familiar with that ANE makes possible.
Natural language processing: Faster, more reliable voice recognition for Dictation and Siri; Improved natural language learning in the Translate app and throughout the system; Instant text translation in Photos, Camera, and other iPhone apps.
Computer vision: Finding objects in images like landmarks, pets, plants, books, and flowers using the Photos app or Spotlight search; Getting additional information about recognized objects using Visual Look Up in places like Safari, Mail, and Messages.
Augmented reality: People occlusion and motion tracking in AR apps.
Video analysis: Detection of faces and objects on video in apps like Final Cut Pro.
Camera effects: Automatic cropping with Center Stage; Background blurring during FaceTime video calls.
Games: Photorealistic effects in 3D video games.
Live Text: Providing optical character recognition (OCR) in Camera and Photos, allowing you to easily copy handwriting or text like a Wi-Fi password or address from images.
Computational photography: Deep Fusion analyzes pixels for better noise reduction, greater dynamic range, and improved auto exposure and white balance, leveraging Smart HDR when appropriate; Shallow depth-of-field photography, including taking Night Mode portraits; Adjusting the level of background blur with Depth Control.
Tidbits: ANE is also used for Photographic Styles in the Camera app, Memories curation and stylistic effects in Photos, personalized recommendations like wallpaper suggestions, VoiceOver image captioning, finding image duplicates in Photos, etc.
Some of the features mentioned above, like image recognition, also function without an ANE present but will run much slower and tax your device's battery.

Looks like they already have what they need to begin with, since 2017.
Of course Apple is known for it's secrecy and would be nice for BrainChip to be involved eventually, but why would they do that when they already have what they need? ''Don't fix what's not broken''.
