Response to the above I’d consider myself a Piha boy with my affiliation to the Byers family as they are fifth generation Piha. Piha is where I learnt to surf and after Māori Bay probably the last place I nearly drowned. Been a few of these over the years. First one Moari bay…..
hold on…. Turned up at the Carpark and it was very big, ugly, and blowing in. There were two guys way out back and i hadn’t been in the water for two weeks. There’s a good rip out by shag rock that I used to get out that day, and I got out back In probably 10m. First wave I took around 6-7 feet just dropped out under my feet and I plumped into the sand. Got back up and took about 10 sets on the head. Waste deep water taking double head height sets on the head. Leash lasted about two minutes and then board was gone.
I washed up on the beach about 10m later and was”dragged up by a stranger, another good bastard found my board a 1/2k down the coast past a break called Muscle beards..
Shit, any of you boys want to here some surf, fishing stories, I must have nearly been dead 10x plus.
I look back these days and laugh as I tell a few these stories, the younger generation look at me and go what the f* where you thinking.

If been smacked over by thuds, beaten by the ocean on multiple accounts, snaked over outside MacDonalds because my my misses was smoking hot and some arse wipe commented, told him to keep mouth in line, he put me in hospital.

Jezz, next story is a ripper. Imagine heading up to Spirits Bay during Cyclone Drena, only truck going north as the entire north is evacuating south…. This was with my wife in the car and a story we rarely tell as it was a true case of life or death… another day on earth it is.

I’m 50 yrs old, done more drugs than most of our pussy youth combined, been drug sober for 25 years apart from the odd cone on our Three Kings fishing trips, the odd cone has its place.
I guess my odd message on this long evasive post is, live life, don’t let money or lacking of hold you up. Going for a surf costs you bugger all and can do wonders for your mental health. Saving money to take your family’s on holiday is also a great goal that rewards you greatly.
Tough times across the board team, been here multiple times and you’ve just got to realise we are still at the very early stages of a major energy transition. Just continue to watch the money transition from oil to renewables. It happening in front of our eyes. Look at the $US 9 billion dollar deal for Ford, where did that money come from?
