I don't know if having a patent granted in China can be directly related to a company having, or wanting to have, China on their dance card. Applying for a patent in China seems, to me, like a waste of time, or maybe just a token tip of the hat to a country with complete disregard for international pleasantries. If your company had a finite number of engineers that you had to spread between NASA, Renesas, and Megachips (to mention a few), wouldn't you choose to leave the Chinese market alone?
