The world’s largest tech companies can overlook the next break-through even when it’s staring them in the face.

I found two Youtube videos that provide great insight into the state of the global chip manufacturing industry, its strategic importance, and the difficulty even large companies (like INTEL) have choosing which technology to back.

Extreme Ultraviolet UV chip fabrication technology is used to make the world’s most advanced chips.

The technology has turned the only company in the world that makes the machines, Dutch ASML, into Europe’s biggest technology firm.

The world’s most advanced chips now have layers in their circuits that are only 1 atom thick. The only technology capable of resolving silicon wafer circuitry patterns to that level is EUV.

EUV research started in the 1990’s and it was a collaboration between the US Government, and the major chip manufacturers including Intel. Everyone understood the importance.

In 1999 a little-known Dutch Lithography company ASML joined the collaboration.

The US government favored working with ASML over the leading chip fabricators in Japan. ASML thought they could produce a working machine by 2006. However, it wasn’t until 2012 that ASMLhad made significant progress. The technology was incredibly difficult to make work. More investment was needed and ASML asked their potential customers to contribute.

In 2017 ASML was finally able to start delivering working EUV machines. But, INTEL didn’t think it was feasible.Batch failure rates (wafer yields) were still very high.

It wasn’t that Intel didn’t think EUV wasimportant, but despite being one of the major investors in its development, they recognized there were still problems with the technology. They thought their competitors were making amistake adopting EUV.

It was clearlya big mistake that allowed their rivals to overtake them and stall Intel’sgrowth.

What are the learnings from this for BRAINCHIP?

    • It takes years for new technology to be understood, perfected, adopted, and then start generating revenue.
    • Groundbreaking new technologies (when you finally get them to work) can generate gigantic profits propelling companies toglobal giant status.
    • Even companies like INTEL can make colossal strategic blunders by backing the wrong technology horse.
    • Right now, everyone can see the giant potentialof AI based technologies (hardware and software). It’s not hard to see how AIwill become a trillion-dollar market. But which technology to back?
    • Brainchip’s neuromorphic technology is not the only path toward AI at the Edge. There are multiple AI Edge hardware choices all claiming to be thebest solution.
    • Like INTEL many of the world’s most capable and successful technology players simply back the wrong horse.
    • It also takes years for technology to become robust enough to be commercially viable.

But, how many companies are looking at Neuromorphic technology and thinking – "this may give us the edge?"

NVIDIA is using much higher density GPU technology to deliver AI processing that Akida achieves at standard fabrication resolutions. What potential AI power could you derive manufacturing neuromorphic at 3 nanometer resolution?

The AI revolution is still in its infancy.
