I am no expert either.
Likely the first run would be a test run.
So probably a few hundred.
After receiving the first run from the first ever tape out, they would build circuits using the first batch and run tests to check for design errors and any anomalies that can only be discovered "when you have a real one." Things like strange capacitor effects between adjacent wires etc. that weren't predicted during design simulation.
The Akida component of the chip is already verified but I am assuming the chip contains other modules that complete the full functionality of the application.
After the testing, there may be need for a design tweak to iron out bugs before doing another run.
Sometimes they nail it one - like BRN's first run of AKIDA.
