A Sales Manager that didn't get about and didn't know people in industry would be a pretty poor sales manager.
You expect someone competent in sales to have a good understanding of the sandbox they are playing in, who's who in the zoo, what the wider market trends are and know their own product.
But at the end of the day, someone in sales has to be on top of their ABCs.
