The increasing number of satellites in low-Earth orbit raises concerns about space debris and the sustainability of space operations. The challenge is not only to advance in space exploration and utilisation but also to do so responsibly, ensuring that future generations can continue to benefit from space technologies without inheriting a legacy of space debris. Sydney-based space startup and automation manufacturer ANT61 has launched an innovative product that paves the way for sustainable space operations. Their flagship product, the #Beacon, is a palm-sized contingency communication unit designed to integrate with de-orbiting hardware. It was recently tested aboard the MAPHEUS 14 sounding rocket in Sweden, reaching an apogee of 265 kilometers. This device aims to provide a safe and reliable way for operators to complete their satellite missions in low-Earth orbit, leaving no debris behind and ensuring compliance with space regulations. The Beacon's successful launch and the demonstration of its capabilities under extreme space conditions represent a significant leap forward for space sustainability. ANT61's achievement is a further evidence of the potential of Australian SMEs in the high-growth space sector. It highlights how local innovation can contribute to solving global challenges, opening doors for other Australian companies to participate in the space industry. This initiative not only puts Australian SMEs on the map in the international market but also encourages collaboration and investment in space sustainability solutions. The successful launch of the Beacon was made possible through collaboration with international partners, including the SSC - Swedish Space Corporation and the German Aerospace Center (DLR). It also featured experiments from other innovative Australian companies like ResearchSat, showcasing the strength of Australian research and development in space technology. This initiative is a shining example of how industry and research collaboration can lead to significant advancements, with the newly developed German rocket motor Red Kite playing a crucial role in the mission's success.
