You're likely right that demurrage wouldn't apply if there's a genuine issue with the ship itself. However, if the diversion was instructed by Metro for their own reasons, then free days likely wouldn't apply.
Typically, free time for loading is around 14 days (although it's factored into the overall shipping cost). While some companies might negotiate for additional free time, any extension usually comes at an additional expense.
