TeamTalk to bring enhanced telco services to the Chatham Islands
TeamTalk is delighted to announce that it has been successful with its bid to
provide enhanced telecommunications services on the Chatham Islands. The
Government will be providing $2.48m of funding to provide a broadband service
to the three schools on the islands and to the whole community. There is
also funding available to provide a cellular service.
TeamTalk and its wholly owned subsidiary Farmside are committed to providing
New Zealanders who live in hard to get places with great telecommunications
services at a good price. "What better place to showcase our expertise and
to demonstrate what can be done than on the Chatham Islands" says Managing
Director David Ware.
It's a big job - we're going to be shipping 10 tonnes of telecommunications
equipment out to the islands and building five cellular and wireless
broadband sites. Everything will be constructed to withstand some of the
most extreme weather conditions seen anywhere. And to ensure the best
possible service we'll be installing some special ADSL equipment along with
wireless broadband which will all be connected to an on island internet cache
and a high capacity satellite service for backhaul.
This is the sort of thing that you can only really do with committed partners
and its great the way the local community, The Ministry of Business,
Innovation and Employment and our installation partner Downers have all gone
the extra mile to make this possible. We're also working closely with some
of the cellular operators and although we're not in a position to announce
anything yet we are hopeful that before too long we'll be able to add the
icing to the cake by providing cellular services as well as the fixed line
broadband services on the islands for the very first time says Ware.
