As Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe prepares to touch down in Australia, chairman of the nation's Mitsubishi Corp, Yorihiko Kojima, has called Australia a "veritable lifeline" for his country's resource-dependent economy, potentially flagging serious investment activity in the short-term, The Australian reports.
According to the newspaper, Mitsubishi is reportedly mulling acquisitions and projects in agribusiness, resources and retail in Australia, potentially including a new energy distribution operation.
Mr Kojima is part of the business delegation travelling with Mr Abe and said the new free-trade agreement between Australian and Japan will bring the trade and investment ties of the two nations closer.
The Australian reports Mr Kojima said Australia remained an attractive destination for investment despite "high labour costs, low productivity and powerful unions".
Ahead of Mr Abe's visit, Mr Abbott said on the weekend "Japan is Australia’s second biggest trading partner with almost $70 billion in two-way trade every year".
