REL: 0908 HRS The New Zealand Refining Company Limited
GENERAL: NZR: Notice of Industrial Action
It is with regret that we inform the market that late yesterday we were
served with a Notice of Proposed Strike Action by members of First Union Inc.
and The New Zealand Engineering, Printing and Manufacturing Union ("Unions")
which covers approximately 160 refinery operators, emergency servicemen,
mechanical, instrument and maintenance personnel. We have been in collective
employment bargaining with the Unions since May 2014.
The Notice proposes a complete withdrawal of labour on 7th and 8th October
2014 which would necessitate a shutdown of processing units at the Marsden
Point Refinery. The Company will continue to operate the Refinery to
Auckland Pipeline during this period.
Health and Safety considerations remain the key focus of management. If the
strike proceeds, the estimated time for a safe shutdown, two days of strike,
followed by a restart of the plant, totals a minimum of eleven days. This
timeframe is dependent on a successful restart of the plant. This would
result in a loss of processing fee revenue which is expected to be in the
range of NZD 8-9 million.
The Company is making its Customers aware of the Notice and will be working
with them to ensure the country's fuel supply chain isn't unduly impacted by
the proposed action. The Company intends to continue to bargain in "good
faith" in order to reach a settlement.
