    AGL Energy Ltd's shares have been placed in a trading halt pending an announcement about a potential material transaction.

    "The reason for the trading halt is that AGL is in discussion concerning a possible material transaction," AGL said in a statement.

    The energy company, based in Sydney, said it expects to make the announcement by December 24.
