Interesting question as this has happened several times over the last few years and more so in the last month. Its a classic example of manipulation placeing simultaneous buy and sell orders through different brokers that cancel each other out but give the perception, because of the higher volume, that there is increased interest in the security.
Not sure who wins in this, other than the broker, but I reckon it targets the unsophisticated into selling through fear as the number of trades is high and the price is steady or slightly lower. This may benefit the long term investor who aquires more stock at lower prices.
Do any of the techies out there know of any indicators that use number of trades or average parcel size as a basis?
