As a holder and someone with financial incentive for REE magnets to stay in production i must admit some recent emerging magnet technologies, specifically Fe16N2 (iron nitride) have some pretty big potential to slow or totally remove the need for Nd containing magnets. From my understanding iron nitride magnets when made correctly have a stronger magnetic field and significantly cheaper production using common iron and nitrogen as the only components which are extremely earth abundant. It seems the current hurdle is efficient and scalable production and tooling for industrial scale but there are companies already moving into this market so i wouldn't bet on those previous estimates of REE magnets demand being totally accurate anymore. However, as with any new technology re designing and switching existing products over will always take time, effort and money so it's hard to know real adoption but it looks very promising.
