There is always an emerging or existing tech that threatens to knock the current king from the throne but as you noted it takes a bit of time for this to happen.
it has to be proven over time to be durable, reliable,economic and actually supplied in enough quantities in the correct form. Then tested and accepted by the industry and customers, have the infrastructure and tooling constructed etc etc during which time the existing technology has usually improved and become relatively more attractive again
Also the competing technology's magnets may not be a suitable replacement in every application for various reasons so it's not like it would completely kill demand in anything less than a very foreseeable timeframe IMO.
for the fear of that scenario to have a material effect on REE demand during the timeframe of DRE's involvent is the last thing on my mind. It would be like lithium investors worrying about sodium ion batteries or something like that. Yes sodium may appear more attractive in some ways, more abundant, cheaper etc but it's also a lot heavier so may not be the best choice in vehicle batteries and would be a huge task to implement.
Its not impossible that at some in the future iron nitride or other tech will replace REEs in a significant way but DREs oft stated aim is to be an explorer, monetise the discovery then get the hell out of dodge with bags of cash. We'll be gone before this is a worry.
Even if it did happen overnight DRE could just say to the same potential buyer, oh so you dont want our REEs..? may we interest you in some iron, nickle,copper, lithium or gold we also have some of that too.
Maybe DRE is an acronym for Discover Resources for Electronics? Or Drill Results Every week?
Either way the future is bright.
