Shocking new analysis of the US Department of Agriculture?s 2009 figures show that biofuel is taking a major bite out of world food supplies. In fact, more than one quarter of American grain crops are being funneled into ethanol for cars rather than into feeding people.

The new research from Earth Policy Institute, found that the 107 million tons of grain specifically grown to produce fuel in the US was enough to feed 330 million people for one year at average world consumption levels.

Generous farm subsidies and changes in fuel laws are driving the biofuel industry. With 200 ethanol distilleries in the country set up to transform food into fuel, the amount of grain processed has tripled since 2004 and is expected to continue to increase.

The Earth Policy Institute study also found that even if the entire U.S. grain crop were converted to ethanol (leaving no domestic crops to make bread, rice, pasta, or feed the animals from which we get meat, milk, and eggs), it would satisfy only 18% of American automotive fuel needs.
