IMO the 25 year old import regime (instituted in 2018) should be upgraded to match that of Canada to 15 year old vehicles. At present one can buy a 15 year old vehicle in Japan cheaper than a 25 year old because both Aus & the USA have the 25 year old vehicle import concessions.
In addition to that, the GVM limit on 25 year old imports should be lifted from 3500 Kgs GVM to 4500 Kgs GVM so that small businesses can benefit with small trucks capable of being driven on a car licence.
We have a FTA with Japan so why not allow small businesses to benefit from that too?
Here is a pic of a Toyota Celsior imported as a 25 year vehicle from Japan. It has 86000 original kms and in pristine condition with immaculate leather interior. It is called a Toyota Celsior in Japan but a Lexus LS400 here and in Western markets. The Japanese decided to call it a Toyota rather than a Lexus because of Toyota product loyalty in Japan and because the Toyota Dealers in Japan in the 90s did not want to open separate premises for the new badge engineered Lexus.
