Really? I feel more taxed today than then. Could be something to do with

means testing on just about everything
stamp duty that keeps going up
incredibly high marginal rates of taxation on low levels of income (bracket creep)
duties and luxury car tax kicking in at low levels
inflation that keeps making stuff more expensive YET means testing comes in at very low levels

When the tax bands are at 43% when your income gets to $300k like it does in America I will acknowledge that yes, I should contribute more. As it is I am infuriated by the existing tax system WHICH LABOR HAS ENDORSED
