About time the rest of the world put their hands into their pockets and help out the Iraqis, instead of sitting on the sidelines and whingeing about imagined slights to their fragile self image; the sooner peace is restored the sooner the US can pull out

Iraqi president seeks South American aid
    May 11, 2005 - 1:59PM

Iraqi President Jalal Talabani has appealed to South America to support his country's efforts to defeat its bloody insurgency.

The terrorists are indiscriminately killing innocents and hampering reconstruction efforts, he says.

"Terrorism is not limited to Iraq, it is a global curse," Talabani told Arab and South American heads of state and ministers gathered for the Summit of the South American-Arab Countries in the Brazilian capital.

    ......

Talabani said the militants had indiscriminately killed innocent civilians. "For every one American killed, 300 innocent Iraqis are killed," he said.

"These criminal groups are also halting the rebuilding of infrastructure," Talabani said.

But he stressed, Iraqis were resilient and committed to establishing a democratic system under which all could prosper from the country's vast natural resource wealth.

Talabani said "Iraqis are also working for the creation of conditions appropriate for the withdrawal of coalition forces" when Iraqi security forces are ready to assume the responsibility of defending the country.
