What is a short sale and why short sell?

Certain securities are approved for short selling. That is, it is permissible to sell a greater quantity of a security than you own.

Securities that may be short sold are referred to as Approved Short Sale Products and Approved Short Sale ETFs. ASX designates which securities are Approved Short Sale Products and Approved Short Sale ETFs. Your broker may or may not offer a short selling facility to private investors.
