I very much doubt it is that high.
I think the $6.4 billion is over several years.
Also, a lot of the money in that figure is really not about maintaining production but for so called research so as to keep the green voters happy.
The Crikey article was based on figures produced by the Productivity Commission which has historically undertaken reviews of the assistance provided to the car manufacturing industry in Australia. They work out a subsidy cost per worker which takes into account all assistance measures provided to the industry.
