The biggest problem for nuclear power in Japan is not the people's mistrust of the technology, but their mistrust of TEPCO and the government. A Fuji Television poll in late May found 81% of people didn't trust the government's information on the crisis and 85% mistrust TEPCO.

At the length, truth will out. The Japanese people will realize it was TEPCO, its regulators and their government that failed them, not nuclear power.

China recently became a larger economy than Japan. The Japanese are not going to cede the efficiencies of nuclear power to the eco-decoration of windmills and the uncertainties of natural gas imports while they watch their larger neighbor grow larger still.
