Two weeks ago much of Sydney was on a quest to help find Egg the pug after the puppy was allegedly stolen at knifepoint, but now it seems the whole story could be made up.

Egg's undeniably adorable face went viral when police reported the 14-week-old was snatched on Australia Avenue in Sydney Olympic Park.

But now Egg's owner, a 29-year-old male, has been charged with making a false report of armed robbery.

Despite the fictitious report, Egg is still missing.

It is an extraordinary turn of events after the man told police he was threatened at knifepoint by three males who took his wallet, backpack and Egg.

The man even gave very detailed descriptions of the alleged assailants as being of Mediterranean or Middle Eastern appearance and in their 30s.

At the time of the alleged dognapping, police said the owner was "extremely distraught" and could not face media.

Through their investigations, which involved looking at CCTV in the area, police found the story did not stack up.

Last night they issued the owner with a notice to appear in court for making a false representation resulting in police investigation.

A NSW police spokeswoman told the ABC she could not imagine why someone would invent such a tale.

Many people banded together to find Egg, even creating a 'Help find kidnapped Egg the Pug' Facebook page to provide updates.

The whereabouts of Egg is still unknown and police still want people to keep an eye out for the puppy and report any information to Crime Stoppers.

The owner will appear in Burwood Local Court on April 6.
