While there are a large amount of retail investors in A2M (which hit the panic button and jump at shadows on every announcement and newspaper report), there is also an increasing number of retail shorters who are equally clueless (don't want to mention any names on this forum as they are a little sensitive).
This is why you see intos like the CBA become substantial holders. They know in the long run they will never be handed back worthless shares (e.g. BAL), but in the mean time they are happy to lend out to commsec retailers to generate income for CBA.
The shorters have been burnt many times on this stock and even recently a couple of shorters here called correctly to $2.20 yet chickened out of their trade in the $2.30s. Just goes to show they are as clueless as some of the retailer investors. I think the instos are playing with them as well, using their algos/bots. Amusing to watch for a long term investor.
