Shares closed sharply lower after reports showed both business and consumer optimism sank this month as President Donald Trump presses ahead with his effort to impose tariffs and slash the federal bureaucracy.
Concern about the US economic growth outlook has accelerated as data points to increasing consumer wariness on both the inflation and jobs fronts.
The S&P 500 shed 1.7 per cent at the closing bell. The Nasdaq Composite slumped 2.2 per cent. The Dow Jones tumbled near 750 points, or 1.7 per cent, paced by UnitedHealth, Nvidia and Amazon. Twenty-three of the Dow’s 30 components fell.
