As Ms Gillard prepared for the meeting with union leaders, Mr Rudd's supporters said yesterday that only an increase in Labor's primary vote to 38 per cent by the end of the winter parliamentary recess would kill off caucus anger about her performance.

They said that when federal parliament broke late last month, Ms Gillard's critics agreed she would have "three Newspolls" to deliver a primary vote of 38 per cent - Labor's level of support at the August 2010 election - if she expected colleagues to accept she could win the next election.

If she could not achieve that by next month's resumption of parliament, there would be increasing pressure on senior cabinet ministers to ask her to resign.
