Sad state of politics when the public wanted a change in government but the alternative was not quite palatable.

The liberals will never be acceptable to that 30% of hard left socialists and some were disillusioned with the government. The greens showed themselves to be too whacky to vote for so "yes" there were some labor voters who thought they had no choice but to vote informal.

Labor went too far to the right with the PNG solution and their public divorce from the greens so many of them voted informal too. You draw a long bow to say because the libs did not appeal to these malcontents and neer-do-wells there is something wrong with the party: There was something wrong with labor. It was labor they could not vote for in spite of having voted that way all their lives.
