The Envelop protein (E) is very highly conserved within all strains of corona viruses and E is also present in all corona viruses. It is one of the four essential structural proteins.

MERS by the way, where the similiarity is least, is not an argument against the conservation of E within corona viruses. All recent strains belong to SARS2. MERS is a different disease from a different corona virus, making it relevent for BIT225, but not in the conservation of E debate. MERS still lives on too. SARS1 only in the lab.

Even though they've compared SARS 2 to SARS1, SARS1 is not infact SARS2's closest relative. That is RaTG13 from bats, and others in pangolins. The genome does not lie. Remember that?

Regardless, it is the HIGH conservation of E thoughout the virus' evolution that is important for BIT225. It cannot be stressed enough how important this point is if 225 comes home to roost...............
