The problem is that you have to double up on your generating capacity. When you build a renewable generator you also need to pair it with a gas or diesel generator that can come on stream quickly when the wind stops blowing. The wind and solar need to be subsidised to be economical and the gas and diesel generators also need subsidies to be able to afford to stand idle. This makes energy an unaffordable luxury for those on lower incomes and too expensive for industry.
