The chief executive of the nation’s fastest-growing big four firm, Deloitte, Giam Swiegers, says accountants will have no choice but to embrace new models.

“We said we would find solutions for clients that are different and that’s what we’ve done,” Sweigers says. “It’s why we’ve outgrown the other big four players since the GFC.”

    Disruptive forces at work
Aside from accounting structures in the mid-tier changing (see “Mid-tier identity crisis”), few in accounting fully understand the impact a more digitally connected world will have on business.

Deloitte has released a report on the impact of “digital disruption” on six of Australia’s biggest industries. Ironically, professional services firms were identified as one of the industries that will continue to be most affected.

“A lot of professionals in these firms are completely ignoring the digital threat in the same way that stockbrokers did and [bookstore] Borders did,” Sweigers says. “I’m convinced that the consequences for [accounting firms] ignoring it will be the same.”

Beaton agrees the fate of those that avoid changes – whether that be in the digital space, in the rigid goodwill partnership model, or in the way firms plan for the future – is doomed.
