Hey Kates9999, good post.
I have contacted 10 federal and state politicians about the issues you raise, and given them both qualitative and statistical data, and also forwarded this to media outlets.
And guess what the response has been from our leaders?
Specifically, they have written to me and said that the HFT and Algorithms and Computer Trading is fine, and that it is what happens in the USA (without problems?) and so will become the future for Australia. They support it.
Why do we elect morons to parliament - all of them?
They do not want to understand. They have never invested themselves. There are no votes in it, especially compared to having their photo taken while kissing babies at the local shopping centre. In fact, most of them are so bound up with their own egos, they just could not give a damn.
Personally, I do not think that many politicians have the intellectual capacity to learn and understand the system, and it's inherent downfall. Besides that, many of them are probably paid off anyway, for instance, how many end up in high paid banking or finance jobs when leaving parliament? Plenty.
Some major broking firms however, are catching on. You will have noticed that only a couple of months ago, Bell Potter announced publicly that they are moving all of their major clients off the ASX and into private Dark Pool exchanges, by the end of 2013. This will become a trend.
All wealthy and powerful clients of the major broking houses will trade via their own Dark Pool exchanges, while at the same time, the brokers and banks will release algorithms on to the public exchanges to fleece the retail mum and dad investor of whatever they have.
And increasingly, an exchange value will be agreed in the Dark Pools, and that will bear no relation to what a company's share price is on the public stock exchange, because the public exchange is a manipulated casino, with share prices having no relation at all to a company's actual industrial production, or exploration.
I expect it is time to leave this game, and perhaps return to Real Estate investing, to Bricks and Mortor, and back into the real world of concrete things, of things with meaning and substance.
