No markets have never been about retail. It wasn't that long ago retail didn't have the ability to act on their own.
People moved away from institutions in droves, new participants entered, the world financial markets underwent enormous retail growth. Ironically the market everyone is so critical of now is a direct result of the market they created.
As I said on the xjo thread recently, the data characteristics on a daily basis is no different now than it was in 2005, 1989 or 1900.
