DoCoMo leading the next-generation race in Japan
June 9, 2003
NTT DoCoMo said it added 57,200 subscribers in May to its FOMA wireless mobile service, bringing the company's 3G subscriber base to 478,200.
The data suggest DoCoMo's latest 3G handset models are proving popular among Japanese consumers.
From early this year DoCoMo began selling 3G handsets that are lighter, cheaper and have longer battery lives than its previous 3G handset models.
The new handsets have contributed to a healthy increase in DoCoMo's 3G subscribers this year after sluggish growth since the service's launch in October 2001.
Japan's mobile phone giant is aiming for 1.46 million 3G subscribers this fiscal year, which runs through next March.
Subscribers percentage increase for last month
J-Phone added 8,800 new subscribers in May, adding a total of 43,700 WCDMA 3G users. KDDI added 523,700 new users, bringing in a total of 8,034,600 new CDMA2000 3G new users.
