As the final speaker stated, (paraphrasing) "mining is a confounding issue for the environmental movement but it has to be supported", "provided that best practice is adopted in every single mine".
Clearly the resources are and will increasingly be in demand and, as one of the other speakers stated, if we don't supply them, someone else will.
Government regulations enforce strict conditions on mining activities but as important is the growing ESG compliance requirements by offtake parties and investors.
I agree with the premise of the 4 Corners program - that there is a potential conflict where the environment could be damaged in order to try to save the environment - and support a strong regime of environmental control but feel there is a tendency for some in the environmental movement to "pile on" on some proposed projects, are prepared to break the law to prosecute their particular cause and lose sight of the bigger picture.
