the new subs have been on the books for some time now along with the frigates that are being built in wa and sa. the subs will also be built in adelaide. she is just re-announcing this to try to deflect from the disasters she has initiated. it will also be a vote winner in sa - that is a hell of a lot of work
i think its a good idea to an extent - however the subs we now possess have hardly been used so this will extend their life some years. it will also be difficult to man them - unless gillard goes the route she had announced a while ago in getting foreigners to sign up and they would be granted a guarenteed pr after 3 months.
but they really should be going nuclear
on the flip side she has taken 1.5 billion from the services which can be added to the budget to give them a "surplus" - most likely however it is just a paper shuffle.
the money they are allocating to the subs could be used to properly outfit the army. things are dire when you have to buy your own kit which is better quality than the stuff issued
