Sound like he knew the value of time and money to me.
By the time his older van claps out he can pick up the same year as he just got rid of for a lot less than he traded it for.
Meantime tax is paid and no penalties and no interest on the borrowed money to pay his tax.
I would be more worried about management coming via SLR
