There were 1m shorts, 7m long sales yesterday, so the 1m shorts certainly didn't know the SP would go up 5% today... or they logically would have held off their shorting.
I suspect they are just trying to cap the SP rise, but the fundamental demand for U is reasserting themselves (as indicated by spot increases) after a long period of decline.
Bring on the upalanche!
