I don't think you can generalise and say a stock is sold-off simply because it goes ex-dividend.
Of the banks today, after allowing for the net 47c dividend then ANZ only lost 8c or .44% for the day. Compared to WBC down 1.77%, NAB .73% and CBA 1.22%.
A stock gone ex-dividend can be an ideal time for a person on the top tax bracket to buy a stock they have been contempalting to buy for a longer term hold.
I don't think you can generalise and say a stock is sold-off...
