    A NSW laboratory under fire for delays in providing COVID-19 results says it tried to warn the Victorian and Queensland governments traveller requirements would put immense strain on pathology companies.

    Over the past two weeks, testing clinics across the eastern states have struggled to keep up with high demand triggered by soaring case numbers and people requiring PCR tests for travel.

    People have reported waiting in line for nine hours, only to be turned away, and infectious people have waited up to six days for their results to be delivered.

    4Cyte operates clinics across NSW, Queensland and Victoria and has been managing a large bulk of the testing and laboratory work across Sydney and Melbourne.

    After days of non-response, the company's medical director, Kate Harris told the ABC in a statement last night it had been hit by a "perfect storm" and that managing demand had become "impossible".

    Dr Harris said 4cyte told the Victorian and Queensland government requiring a negative PCR result as a condition of interstate travel would create a problem for pathology services.
