It would be very helpful to find out whether a technology roadmap has been put out by Western Digital. They are heavily invested in mechanical disk drive technology but the rate at which solid state storage is progressing means WD have to find a way to "eat their own babies" otherwise they will go the same way as Kodak when photography transitioned from film to digital. In the near term they can go solid state by buying memory chips from established players like Samsung or Intel but this means WD becomes just another price taker and has limited ability to innovate because it has to develop products using the same technology that is available to any other customer of Samsung or Intel.
