Rambus is probably the best example as they are big on licensing patents to heavyweights in the industry.
If we take the below examples and say Western Digital takes out the 20 year license option, it could mean $20M USD per quarter that totals $1.6B USD. Western Digital could in addition do what Samsung did with Rambus and buy $200M with of 4DS stocks.
Royalties also come with license deals which makes a company attractive for an acquisition being made on a company making money.
Samsung over 5 years paid Rambus $25M USD per quarter totalling $500M USD and additionally purchasing $200M worth of stocks. This is a potential scenario with 4DS Memory.
SK Hynix over 5 years paid $10M USD per quarter totalling $200M.
Micron here we’re paying Rambus $10M USD per quarter with a rolling 12 month cap of $40M, or $280M during the initial term.
Western Digital also has an active license agreement with Rambus licensing its ReRAM technology which is due to expire this calendar year.
