Yeah that's apparently how Oracle Exadata uses Intel's Optane right now.

The Optane fills the delta between dynamic DRAM handled data and other data that is not cycling/ doesn't need DRAM.

Thats basically cache like behaviour.
cache is not a dirty word. It's a good on ramp to industry adoption imo...
