After 4 weeks of testing, we can be certain this now works.
Failure of the etch is a near immediate test result, and David would have had to announce a price sensitive fail. So we know this works. What we don't know is how well this works, i.e. whether all metrics are suitable for storage class memory.
Why is the testing taking this long? Because of endurance and retention.Endurance is the number of memory cycles before the cell fails. For the first time, 4DS memory is being controlled by a transistor, which prevents current fluctuations (when an external test system was used) and that lead to the premature death of the cells. We hit 10^7 cycles then, and we are hoping for 10^10-14 cycles now. We have improved the cell since, adding a new terminal that increases endurance further. Fingers crossed.
Retention is how long (seconds) the memory can be read before it can't. DRAM retention is 64 milliseconds. It is volatile, meaning a huge waste of power just to refresh the cell. 4DS are hoping for retention of 1 hour, or to hit it out of the park, 1 day. Fingers crossed. They should also know the speed by now. In November meeting last year, Wilbert mentioned that the single cell had a speed exceeding state of the art DRAM, approaching SRAM.
Perhaps that's why they are smiling in the photo? I noted Guido is in the sun with a saintly glow. I note the guys doing the testing are having water, to keep their wits about them. The share price was 14c when the negative announcement about endurance came out, so this has a long way to run.
If the chip has the required metrics for storage class memory, we will be acquired for many multiples of the current share price, 6.6c. David is unable to release the metrics one by one, or the fact that we have a working chip at all, as this will create a false market. All the metrics, a working chip, and yield all need to be met before he can announce that we have a memory technology for storage class memory. It's all or nothing, and still high risk. But, they are smiling. That's a good sign. I expect a price of around 40-50c if they hit it out of the park, going into acquisition talks.
