My Lay understanding is the balancing act between DRAM and Flash has big cost and performance implications for a data center. We would hope to be playing in the space on graph where Optane is shown. By optimising and smoothing the 'curve' they get benefits (contrast to if there was no Optane in graph you get a cliff between DRAM and Secondary Storage and have to decide if you want to be heavier on DRAM or Flash and where your step down is gonna be)
As a crappy anaolgy: Real word delivery of physical stuff; Some times you want a Semi trailer, Sometimes you want a motorcycle courier. Other times something in between like a van is the best. Sometimes you might even want to move stuff from one to the other so its easier and faster/more efficient for the next part of the journey.
Another way to look at possible use case between DRAM and Flash in crappy analogy #2 is like working with tools...
You can have something in your hands or on your person, this lets you use it very quickly when you want it (DRAM), but you can't hold much at a time and it's heavy, you'll eventually need to put it down (power consumption).
You can also have lots of tools in the shed out the back (Flash), it has lots of space and is not heavy, it just sits there until you need it (retention), but if you need something its a long slow walk to the shed. (and idk the ground is muddy or something so we can't just put stuff on the ground ok)
Solution. Go to the shed, Put all the stuff you usually need in a toolbox and bring the toolbox and put the toolbox next to you for fast access while working, moving the tool you need to hand and then back to the toolbox. At end of the day put the toolbox back in the shed.
