An interesting pattern EW. So the shorters are buyers as well, and this could be an accumulation strategy by a professional group. One thing I do know is that one of their objectives would be to hide their accumulation efforts, i.e net volume traded, as much as possible. As you point out, if they just went into the Market and purchased all that they wanted then they would drive the SP up significantly. I'll have to start monitoring this pattern you have described.
